Excel to Markdown

Copy cells from Excel or Google Sheets and paste them as a Markdown table.

How it works

Copy cells, then paste here

  1. In Excel or Google Sheets, select the cell range you need and copy it.
  2. Paste on this page. If the clipboard includes an HTML table, merged cells and headers can be read. Tab-separated text also converts to a table.
  3. Review the Markdown and edit it. Select the source to copy it, or choose Copy formatted text for a rich-text editor.

Example: a merged spreadsheet header

The example below has a merged Revenue header. Choose Try a spreadsheet example above to convert these cells.

Team Revenue
Q1 Q2
North 120 150
South 90 110

Markdown has one header row and no merged-cell syntax. With Align tables off, the converter flattens the header labels into columns:

| Team | Revenue / Q1 | Revenue / Q2 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| North | 120 | 150 |
| South | 90 | 110 |

Values, formulas, and formatting

The converter uses what the spreadsheet places on the clipboard. Normal cell copying usually provides displayed values. It does not evaluate Excel formulas, preserve workbook formulas, or update values when a workbook changes. Copying a formula as text keeps it as text.

Cell colors, workbook styles, and interactive features do not transfer to a Markdown table. Line breaks within supported cells become <br>. Check complicated merged ranges against the original.

Make the source easier to read

Turn on Align tables to pad Markdown columns with spaces. This changes source spacing, not cell alignment in the rendered table. The option is off by default.

If cells do not form a table

Copy the cell range itself rather than a chart or a file. Keep tabs between columns and line breaks between rows when copying as plain text. A screenshot uses image recognition instead, which uploads the image to backend worker and can make recognition errors.

This tool does not accept XLSX, CSV, or other file uploads. Open the file in a spreadsheet application and copy the cells. It does not import comma-separated CSV files as a workbook.
